It is treatable and preventable, but many people who have it don’t know, or can’t afford the treatment. It is caused by the lack of safe drinking water and adequate sanitation and hygiene.
It kills about 760,000 children under the age of 5 and affects 1.7 billion people globally. In total, it was the cause of 1.9 million deaths in 2013, between children and adults.
