'Fast and the Furious' star Paul Walker killed in car crash

The news was confirmed by a post on his official Facebook account on Sunday morning.

“It is with a truly heavy heart that we must confirm that Paul Walker passed away today in a tragic car accident while attending a charity event for his organization Reach Out Worldwide,” the post read.

“He was a passenger in a friend's car, in which both lost their lives. We appreciate your patience as we too are stunned and saddened beyond belief by this news,” it added.

Meanwhile, an earlier report from TMZ said Walker was in Santa Clarita, north of Los Angeles, before the accident where he was attending a car show to support the Philippine typhoon relief effort after it was ravaged by Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan).

Witnesses told TMZ that the driver of the car lost control and slammed into a tree or post then burst into flames killing the passengers.

WHOA! Man Successfully Sues Wife Over Ugly Children

A Chinese man divorced and then sued his ex-wife for giving birth to what he called an extremely ugly baby girl, the Irish Times reported.

Initially, Jian Feng accused his wife of infidelity, so sure that he could never father an unattractive child.

When a DNA test proved that the baby was his, Feng’s wife came clean on a little secret — before they met, she had undergone about $100,000 worth of cosmetic surgery in South Korea.

Feng sued his ex-wife on the grounds of false pretenses, for not telling him about the plastic surgery and duping him into thinking she was beautiful, The Huffington Post reported.

The kicker? He won. A judge agreed with Feng’s argument and ordered his ex-wife to fork over $120,000.

“I married my wife out of love, but as soon as we had our first daughter, we began having marital issues,” he told the Irish Times. “Our daughter was incredibly ugly, to the point where it horrified me.”

UPDATE: According to the New York Post this story has been circulating for years on the internet and reports of Feng’s lawsuit against his wife were originally reported in European and US newspapers in 2004, but with no details of any adjudication or payout. While many have cast doubt on the wild tale, details of an alleged civil settlement were reported on Chinese Web sites last year and English-language media this week.

How to Get More Traffic to Your Blog and Keep It There

by Jeff Goins | | Twitter, Facebook, Google+
It happens to the best of us — eventually.

At some point, each and every blogger faces the same issue. It’s the bane of our existence and the great quandary causing us to scratch our heads.

How to get more traffic for your blog
The blog traffic jam.

That sudden halt of visitors to your site that has you wondering, “What did I do wrong?”

It may happen at the beginning, middle, or end of a blog, but it’s inevitable. At some point, we all go through this.

If you’re just getting started or have been blogging for a while, you’ve faced this nemesis. And you’ve asked yourself,

How do I get out of this? How do I get more traffic to my site?

To help answer that question, I came up with a simple list. But before that, let’s talk about motives…

Check your motives at the door

So, you have a blog, but want more traffic? First, check your motives:

Is it help people, be a resource, and make a difference? Or to make you famous?

If the latter, quit blogging now. If you’re blogging for self-serving reasons, then that may be the real inhibitor to your blog’s growth.

Because here’s the truth:

People want you to talk about them, not you.

It’s okay to write about personal experiences and share what you’ve learned from a first-hand perspective, but be careful of making yourself into some kind of blog rock star. Instead, aim to be a resource and help to others.

The irony is that if you do that, you’ll end up becoming a star.

23 tips for getting more traffic to your site

Here are some ideas for how to get more traffic to your blog (click the links for more helpful resources).

Leave thoughtful comments on other people’s blogs.
Write shorter posts.
Blog consistently.
Write less.
Be a resource.
Use trackbacks.
Organize your posts with lists and subheads.
Get on Twitter. Tweet links to your posts and other useful content.
Link out to other sites (but only ones that will help people).
Share your content on Facebook (and ask your friends to share it, too).
Write stuff people will want to link to.
Ask questions.
Be funny.
Be clever.
Be remarkable.
Request a link from someone else to a blog post.
Do some public speaking.
Write attractive headlines.
Optimize your site for search engines.
Deliver killer content.
Guest post on someone else’s blog.
Write in the second person (“you” not “me”).
Tell stories.
Any serious blogger will eventually hit a plateau and need some help extending her platform beyond its initial reach.

This happens to all of us. And there’s nothing wrong with asking the question: “How can I get more traffic?” (Just make sure that your motive is to help and not merely to make you famous.)

We all get stuck some times. This is where using a “jump starter” like this list may come in handy. (Thanks to Seth Godin for inspiring this post with his own list of tips for how to get traffic for your blog.)

China H7N9 bird flu survivor gives birth

A Chinese woman who spent five weeks in intensive care with H7N9 bird flu has given birth to a girl in what was described as a "miracle" first, according to state media.

This file photo shows a H7N9 bird flu patient at a hospital in Kaifeng, central Henan province, on April 16, 2013. A Chinese woman who spent five weeks in intensive care with H7N9 bird flu has given birth to a girl in what was described as a "miracle" first, according to state media.

Qiu Yan, 25, was five months pregnant when she was diagnosed with the virus in April, early in China's human outbreak of the disease.

She was in a "very serious condition" and underwent antibiotic, antiviral and hormone treatments, along with daily X-rays, during her therapy, the Global Times cited doctors as saying.

Qiu, from Zhenjiang in the eastern province of Jiangsu, is the world's first H7N9 survivor to give birth, the paper said.

"Her lung was severely infected and she needed a respirator to breathe because she was suffering from respiratory failure," it quoted Qiu's doctor Sun Lizhou as saying.

Qiu was discharged from intensive care in May but stayed in hospital until she delivered the baby -- a 3.3-kilogram (7.3-pound), 50-centimetre (1.6-feet) girl -- on Wednesday.

"It was a miracle," Sun said according to the paper.

The first human cases of the H7N9 virus were reported in late March and it had infected 132 people in mainland China, killing 43 by the end of June, according to official data.

Experts fear the possibility of the virus mutating into a form easily transmissible between humans, with the potential to trigger a pandemic.

Both Qiu and her baby were in stable condition but the child will have to be checked regularly for any possible effects of the virus, Sun added, according to the report.

The Albino Kangaroo

Rene "the albino kangaroo"..an extremely rare find in the wild..

The usual fate of such striking creature is a very short lifespan. They make easy prey for wild dogs, foxes, and even eagles from the moment they are born. Their pale skin also makes them susceptible to sun burn and cancer, much like a fair-skinned human.

To add to their problems, albino kangaroos also tend to have a genetic predisposition towards sight and hearing issues, making it even more difficult to escape hungry predators.

“The whole thing about natural selection is that you want to blend in. Grey kangaroos are grey for a reason – they blend in with the rest of the environment,”

However, Rene has surprised many by growing to be around two years of age and is expected to lead a normal life at the Namadgi National Park.

Miriam’s top 6 pork punch lines

THAT'S SOLUTION. This is what Sen Miriam Defensor Santiago calls throwing corrupt politicians at sea. Santiago cracked jokes on the pork barrel scam at the National Student Conference on Hotel and Restaurant Management. Photo by Rappler/Franz Lopez

MANILA, Philippines – Pick-up lines are out. Pork barrel punchlines are in.

Sen Miriam Defensor Santiago veered away from her usual pick-up lines, the staple of her public speeches especially before young audience members.

In her speech at the National Student Conference on Hotel and Restaurant Management on Monday, September 9, the senator focused her ire and humor on the controversial pork barrel scam.

READ: Miriam: Court case can suspend politicos in 'pork' scam

The senator has been a vocal critic of her colleagues implicated in the scam, especially her archenemy Senate Minority Leader Juan Ponce Enrile.

The multi-billion peso scam involves an alleged web of corruption where lawmakers allow their development funds to be transferred to fake non-government organizations in exchange for kickbacks.

Santiago delivered the following lines at the start of her speech, drawing laughter from the audience:

1. Anong tawag 'pag nagtapon ka ng basura sa dagat? Sagot: Pollution

Ano naman ang tawag kapag tinapon mo sa dagat ang mga pulitikong kurakot? Sagot: Solution.

(What do you call throwing trash at sea? Answer: Pollution.

What do you call throwing corrupt politicians at sea? Answer: Solution.)

(When you lie to a congressman or senator, you will be charged with perjury with a jail term. When a congressman or senator lies to you, they are just doing their job and will even have a new term.)

3. How to tell if a politician is telling the truth:

Whenever he’s crossing his arms, he may be telling the truth.

Whenever he’s stoking his chin, he might be telling the truth.

Whenever he looks at you straight in the eyes, he might be telling the truth.

But when he opens his mouth, he is lying.

4. There was a study on the connection between government employees and the sport they play. Ang paborito raw sport ng entry-level government employees ay basketball. Kapag lower management position na, ang paborito raw nila ay bowling. Kapag upper management naman, paborito raw nila ay tennis. Ang paborito raw na sport ng high-level government officials is golf.

The study then made this conclusion, kapag tumataas ang posisyon mo sa gobyerno, lumiliit ang balls mo.

(They say the favorite sport of entry-level government employees is basketball. For lower management position, it’s bowling. For upper management, their favorite is tennis. The favorite sport of high-level government officials is golf. The study then made this conclusion, the higher your position in government, the smaller your balls get.)

5. May 3 doktor, pinag-uusapan [nila] kung anong pasyente ang pinakamadaling operahan. Sabi ng isa: Electricians – everything inside them is color-coded.

Sabi ng pangalawang doctor: Librarians – everything inside them is in alphabetical order.

Sabi ng pangatlo, pulitiko ang pinakamadali: They have no brains. They have no guts. They have no hearts. And they have no balls.

One said: Electricians – everything inside them is color-coded.

The second said: Librarians – everything inside them is in alphabetical order.

The third said politicians: They have no brains. They have no guts. They have no hearts. And they have no balls.)

And last and the most prolific of all these liars, Number 1: Pulitiko. That’s the end of the story.

Number 3: beautician. They will say the customer is beautiful even when she is not.

Number 2: jeepney conductor. He will say there is still room for two even when the jeepney is full.

Number 1: politicians. That’s the end of the story). – Rappler.com

September 1752

Here is an interesting historical fact. Just have a look at the calendar for the month of September 1752.

Go to Google type "September 1752 calendar" & see for yourself.
You will notice, 11 days are simply missing from the month.
Here's the explanation: This was the month during which England shifted from the Roman Julian Calendar to the Gregorian Calendar.
A Julian year was 11 days longer than a Gregorian year. So, the King of England ordered 11 days to be wiped off the face of that particular month.

So, the workers worked for 11 days less that month, but got paid for the whole month. That's how the concept of "paid leave" was born. Hail the King!!!

In the Roman Julian Calendar, April used to be the first month of the year; but the Gregorian Calendar observed January as the first month. Even after shifting to the Gregorian Calendar, many people refused to give up old traditions and continued celebrating 1st April as the New Year's Day. When simple orders didn't work, the King finally issued a royal dictum; which stated that those who celebrated 1st April as the new year's day would be labelled as fools. From then on, 1st April became April Fool's Day.

Cancer Cells Meet its Nemesis

In March, researchers announced that five people with a type of blood cancer called acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) were in remission following treatment with genetically engineered immune cells from their own blood. One person's tumours disappeared in just eight days. Sadelain has now told New Scientist that a further 11 people have been treated, almost all of them with the same outcome. Several trials for other cancers are also showing promise.

What has changed is that researchers are finding ways to train the body's own immune system to kill cancer cells. Until now, the most common methods of attacking cancer use drugs or radiation, which have major side effects and are blunt instruments to say the least.

The latest techniques involve genetically engineering immune T-cells to target and kill cancer cells, while leaving healthy cells relatively unscathed.

New research aims to teach computers common sense

PITTSBURGH – Researchers are trying to plant a digital seed for artificial intelligence by letting a massive computer system browse millions of pictures and decide for itself what they all mean.
The system at Carnegie Mellon University is called NEIL, short for Never Ending Image Learning. In mid-July, it began searching the Internet for images 24/7 and, in tiny steps, is deciding for itself how those images relate to each other. The goal is to recreate what we call common sense — the ability to learn things without being specifically taught.
It’s a new approach in the quest to solve computing’s Holy Grail: getting a machine to think on its own using a form of common sense. The project is being funded by Google and the Department of Defense’s Office of Naval Research.
“Any intelligent being needs to have common sense to make decisions,” said Abhinav Gupta, a professor in the Carnegie Mellon Robotics Institute.
NEIL uses advances in computer vision to analyze and identify the shapes and colors in pictures, but it is also slowly discovering connections between objects on its own. For example, the computers have figured out that zebras tend to be found in savannahs and that tigers look somewhat like zebras.
In just over four months, the network of 200 processors has identified 1,500 objects and 1,200 scenes and has connected the dots to make 2,500 associations.
Some of NEIL’s computer-generated associations are wrong, such as “rhino can be a kind of antelope,” while some are odd, such as “actor can be found in jail cell” or “news anchor can look similar to Barack Obama.”
But Gupta said having a computer make its own associations is an entirely different type of challenge than programming a supercomputer to do one thing very well, or fast. For example, in 1985, Carnegie Mellon researchers programmed a computer to play chess; 12 years later, a computer beat world chess champion Garry Kasparov in a match.
Catherine Havasi, an artificial intelligence expert at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said humans constantly make decisions using “this huge body of unspoken assumptions,” while computers don’t. She said humans can also quickly respond to some questions that would take a computer longer to figure out.
“Could a giraffe fit in your car?” she asked. “We’d have an answer, even though we haven’t thought about it” in the sense of calculating the giraffe’s body mass.
Robert Sloan, an expert on artificial intelligence and head of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Illinois, Chicago, said the NEIL approach could yield interesting results because just using language to teach a computer “has all sorts of problems unto itself.”
“What I would be especially impressed by is if they can consistently say ‘zebra, zebra, zebra’ if they see the animal in different locations,” Sloan said of the computers.
Gupta is pleased with the initial progress. In the future, NEIL will analyze vast numbers of YouTube videos to look for connections between objects.
“When we started the project, we were not sure it would work,” he said. “This is just the start.”
Neither Mountain View, California-based Google Inc. nor the Office of Naval Research responded to questions about why they’re funding NEIL, but there are some hints. The Naval Research website notes that “today’s battlespace environment is much more complex than in the past” and that “the rate at which data is arriving into the decision-making system is growing, while the number of humans available to convert the data to actionable intelligence is decreasing.”
In other words, computers may make some of the decisions in future wars. The Navy’s website notes: “In many operational scenarios, the human presence is not an option.”
NEIL’s motto is “I Crawl, I See, I Learn,” and the researchers hope to keep NEIL running forever. That means the computer might get a lot smarter.
Or it might not.

Japan remembers 2011 earthquake and tsunami: in photos

People can be seen praying for victims of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan, in this photo taken on Sunday 10 March 2013, during a temporary visit to Namie town. It is inside the no-go zone around the tsunami-crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. With a minute of silence, tolling bells and prayers, Japan will on Monday mark the second-year anniversary of the disaster that killed thousands of people and set off a nuclear crisis that shattered public trust in atomic power and the nation's leaders - as the following pictures will show.

An anti-nuclear protester wearing a protective suit and mask holds a placard reading '2011 Fukushima' near the parliament building in Tokyo on Sunday 10 March. Thousands of protesters marched in the Japanese capital calling on the government to shun nuclear power, a day before the second anniversary of a disaster that triggered the world's worst atomic disaster in 25 years.

People join hands facing the sea to mourn the victims of the 2011 tragedy, in Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture, early in the morning.

What zero traffic in Metro Manila looks like

ABS-CBNnews.com
Posted at 11/28/2013 8:00 PM | Updated as of 11/28/2013 8:00 PM

MANILA -- Stretches of Metro Manila roads with absolutely no vehicles: this was the rare sight shown in a video that is currently making the rounds online.

In the 90-second video titled "Empty Metro Manila Timelapse: The Pacquiao Effect," several roads in Quezon City, Makati, Pasig and Manila, among others, are seen completely without moving vehicles.

The video, which was uploaded Tuesday by user Project Box, already had over 28,000 views as of writing.

According to the description of the clip, the footage were shot during the match between Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao and American Brandon Rios in Macau last Sunday.

In a behind-the-scenes snippet shown at the end of the video, the crew is seen shooting the roads with several traveling vehicles.

Comments on the video noted that the effect of the roads appearing to be empty can be achieved through a video editing software and timelapse photography.

Others described the sights shown in the video as "amazing," but doubted that the roads were ever empty even as Pacquiao's fight last Sunday had many Filipinos tuned in.

PNoy to Manny: Don't engage in media war

TAGBILARAN, BOHOL- President Aquino denied that the government is out to harass boxing superstar and Sarangani Representative Manny Pacquiao despite a reported order from the Bureau of Internal Revenue to freeze his assets.

Speaking to reporters, Aquino said Pacquiao has nothing to worry about if he has complied with the relevant tax rules and laws.

"Bakit siya iha-harass? Saan ba ang logic noon? I understand, the accounts total P1.1 million. What is that compared to all of his winnings? Ang dulo nito siguro, and with all due respect to Congressman Pacquiao, if he believes that he has complied with all the necessary rules and all the necessary laws, surely he has all the evidence to afford," Aquino said.

Aquino defended the BIR, saying that its queries to Pacquiao are "legitimate" and were done as early as two years ago.

He also described Pacquiao's nonresponse as "cavalier."

The BIR has been asking Pacquiao to submit original proof that he had paid his taxes in the US.

"Ang isyu ng BIR is he was being asked two years ago and medyo parang, ang pagkaintindi ko, cavalier—‘yung hindi nagre-respond to legitimate summonses by the BIR," Aquino said.

"So he earns abroad. He pays taxes there. Yung tax rate nila at tax rate natin magkaiba yata. My understanding—I am not, of course, an expert on the Internal Revenue Code—but the bottom line is the difference ng tax rate natin at tax rate doon still has to be made up."

Aquino urged Pacquiao to respond the to BIR through the process and not to engage in "a media war."

"If he did right, then I’m sure he will be able to prove that he did right, and therefore there is no issue. So the way to settle it is to answer all of these queries by the BIR and not to engage in a media war. The media will not decide who is right or wrong, ‘di ba? It will be our courts eventually, if it gets to that, who will decide. But, again, the process has been two years."

Meet former child wonder Serena Dalrymple

MANILA -- At 23, Serena Dalrymple is still trying to "figure things out."

The former child wonder, who rose to fame in 1997 for her "Isa pang Chickenjoy" TV ad, is currently based in London where she is taking up postgraduate studies.

Dalrymple graduated from De La Salle-College of St. Benilde in Manila with a business administration degree. She then left for Los Angeles to work there for a year, "but I realized that I still don't know what I want to do."

"So I decided to take up masters hoping it'll help me figure things out," Dalrymple told ABS-CBNnews.com through e-mail.

She only recently started her studies in Master of International Business at the Hult International Business School London, having transferred to the United Kingdom in August this year.

Child wonder

Before taking a special interest in business management, Dalrymple was of course a household name in the late '90s, when she appeared in several high-profile films often as a witty and an outspoken little girl.

In what she considers her "most memorable" role, Dalrymple acted alongside film veteran Vilma Santos in Chito Roño's "Bata, Bata… Pa'no Ka Ginawa?" in 1998. At the time, she was only 7.

Her portrayal of Maya, a daughter itching with curiosity, was preceded and followed by several other roles on the big screen, which, in contrast, were more light-hearted and even comedic.

In 2003, she debuted as a teen star via the first "Ang Tanging Ina" movie. Dalrymple, who played comedienne Ai Ai delas Alas' daughter in the blockbuster, was evidently no longer the child star with the signature boyish haircut.

Her last professional engagement as an actress was the same character in 2010, when the third entry in the comedy film series was released.

Admitting she no longer has any interest in resuming her showbiz career, Dalrymple said she nonetheless keeps in touch with her friends from the industry.

"I met up with Rica Peralejo and Camille Prats last year when I was still living in California," she said, referring to the actresses she co-starred with in various ABS-CBN shows.

New dream

Now, a typical day for Dalrymple includes attending school from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., going to the gym at around 8 p.m., and returning home by 9 p.m.

Pahiya Much - Direk!!!

5 Things To Do While You’re Single

Being single isn’t a disease, It’s an opportunity for you to grow, learn, and experience life in a way that you won’t be able to when you are married.

Here are 5 things to do while you’re single:

1. Be firm in your faith.

- Build your faith on a foundation that cannot be shaken, no matter whom you encounter. This will not only bring you peace during your season of singleness, but will also help you in your journey of finding the person you plan on being with for the rest of your life.Don’t let your beliefs change depending on whom you’re trying to impress. This tactic will always come around to hurt you in the long run.

2. Get grounded in your personal identity.

- Know who you are before trying to explain it to someone else. Be confident in your purpose, your body, your identity, and your life choices. Relationships will not fix your identity problems, but they can be an added bonus to who you are as a person.

3. Focus on school, or starting you career.

- You have a lot of time on your hands. Instead of spending it wallowing in your singleness, GO MAKE SOMETHING OF YOURSELF! You are worth more than what sitting on a couch waiting for your significant other makes you out to be. Step out into the world and take maturity by the horns. Start building your future instead of simply dreaming about it.

4. Learn to be independent until needed otherwise.

- There is nothing wrong with aspiring to be a stay at home mom, or even being a man who works from home. But until either of these opportunities come into play, you need to make sure you are doing everything possible to provide for yourself, your future family, and your future aspirations. Don’t live day-to-day. Plan for the future, and look forward to the possibilities. You owe it to yourself to mature in all

5. Stop dating people you know aren’t right for you.

- While you’re single, stay away from mindless dating experiences. If you know they aren’t your type, don’t give them the time of day. All you are going to do is hurt them and eventually confuse your heart. Stop dating the wrong people and start focusing on becoming the right person.

WATCH: Enrile says Miriam a bitter, obsessive hater

MANILA - Senate Minority Leader Juan Ponce Enrile on Wednesday lashed back at his political nemesis, Sen, Miriam Defensor Santiago.

In his privilege speech, Enrile called Santiago a bitter and obsessive hater full of inanities.

"This former judge does not seem to understand the meaning of due process...Due process means you hear first the evidence before you condemn. A parrot can memorize legal principles, but cannot apply them," he said.

He denied Santiago's accusation that he carries firearms even inside the restroom, saying that he only carries a fly swatter.

He also ridiculed Santiago's pick-up lines and said the lady senator nearly flunked the Bar exam.

He also reminded the public that Santiago used to see a psychiatrist.

Enrile lamented that the Blue Ribbon Committee hearing on the pork barrel scam turned into an occasion to attack him. He denied being the mastermind of the scam.

Masturbation good for your health?

MANILA, Philippines - Only a few people may admit to doing "it," but experts have said that masturbation is beneficial to a person's mental, social, and physical health.

According to the McKinley Health Center at the University of Illinois, masturbation (which they defined as touching one's own sex organs for pleasure) reduces stress, induces sleep, and can help people to become familiar and comfortable with their body.

Citing studies, the McKinley health handout also cited the following perks of masturbation:

alleviates premenstrual tension for many women
provides a healthy sexual outlet for people who choose to abstain from sex with partners or who do not currently have available sexual partners
can be a route to safer sex, to help prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV
allows for sexual pleasuring for those who are not ready to engage in vaginal, anal, or oral sex
increases blood flow to the genital region, which can help overall sexual functioning
helps women learn how to achieve orgasm
helps men to increase ejaculatory control and manage rapid or delayed ejaculation.
Masturbation myths debunked

Contrary to what some people think, the McKinley Health Center said masturbation does not lead to insanity or hair growing on the palms. It added that it does not drain excessive energy from the body.

"There are no harmful side effects of masturbation," it said, adding that regardless of cultural attitudes and values, masturbation has been found in all societies.

Here are some myths that McKinley said are unfounded in medical and social science:

Only people who cannot find sexual partners, or who are socially inadequate, masturbate
Masturbation leads to physical problems such as mental illness and growing hair on your palms
Masturbation "ruins" a person for partner sex
Men will run out of semen or sperm if they masturbate excessively
Others, including medical doctors and sexual partners, will be able to tell if you masturbate.

Injured ‘Spider-Man’ Actor Blames Equipment Malfunction

Daniel Curry, a young actor who was badly injured last month while performing in the Broadway musical “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark,” has filed court papers contending that his accident was due to malfunctioning equipment in the show, and not to human error, as the show’s producers have maintained.

The legal filing in Manhattan Supreme Court on Monday seeks to halt any effort by the producers to alter or destroy a computerized stage lift until his experts can examine, photograph, and test the equipment to prepare for a possible civil complaint, which the performer is now considering, according to one of his lawyers, Elias N. Fillas. The lift was elevating Mr. Curry to the stage when the accident took place. The lawyers are also requesting any contracts and other paperwork related to the lift, and any internal production reports about the accident. The Daily News first reported the legal filing.

The court papers include the most specific information to date about Mr. Curry’s injuries; he sustained fractured legs and a fractured foot, and has had surgeries and amputations as a result. In a telephone interview on Wednesday, Mr. Fillas declined to describe the amputations or comment on Mr. Curry’s recovery, other than to say he remains at Bellevue Hospital.

The injury occurred at the Aug. 15 performance of the musical when Mr. Curry, an ensemble cast member who was one of the nine Spider-Man dancers, found his foot caught in the lift and then pinned when a trap door closed on it. He was immediately taken to Bellevue.

The day after Mr. Curry’s accident, the show’s technicians concluded that the computer-controlled scenery had been working properly and was not the cause of the injury, according to a spokesman for the “Spider-Man” producers. The spokesman, Rick Miramontez, said human error was to blame, though he emphasized that the producers were not pointing the finger at Mr. Curry and that multiple people were involved in executing the scene where Mr. Curry was injured.

But the legal papers contend that Mr. Curry sustained “severe and permanent bodily injury as a result of a lift machine that malfunctioned.” The filing did not cite evidence, but included a statement from Mr. Curry that the computerized lift was supposed to operate “without any maneuvering on my part.”

Reached on Wednesday, Mr. Miramontez said in a statement: “Everyone at ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark’ is extraordinarily concerned with Daniel’s well-being. The producers have done an extensive internal investigation and are confident that the production and its equipment were in no way responsible for the unfortunate incident.”

While cast members in Broadway musicals routinely suffer minor injuries, “Spider-Man” has had a number of serious accidents. Soon after the show began performances in November 2010, another ensemble dancer, Christopher Tierney, sustained broken ribs and other internal injuries when he fell 20 feet from a stage platform because his safety tether was not properly attached. The actor who stepped in for Mr. Tierney, Joshua Kobak, said he went on to suffer injuries, and filed a $6 million lawsuit against the equipment provider and other companies. One of the show’s lead actresses, Natalie Mendoza, quit early on after she sustained a concussion when she was hit in the head by a rope. Her successor, T. V. Carpio, was injured on the set as well.

Marquez unimpressed with Pacquiao’s comeback win

MACAU – Everyone was so hyped with Manny Pacquiao’s return to winner’s circle in dominant fashion, except maybe for a couple of names.

One of them is Juan Manuel Marquez, who dealt Pacquiao the biggest loss of his career – via a stunning sixth round knockout last December.

The 40-year-old Mexican rival of Pacquiao was left unimpressed.

Marquez insinuated in an interview with boxingscene.com’s Salvador Rodriguez that Brandon Rios is a tailor-made for Pacquiao’s comeback fight.

"It was important for Manny Pacquiao to look good, so they gave him an opponent like Brandon Rios for his return and he looked impressive. I believe that Bob Arum is doing his job in getting him these types of opponents, but it will be important to see him face tougher competition and see how he looks against those kind of fighters after suffering that knockout," Marquez told boxingscene.com.

The former four-division champion felt that Rios is not in their caliber and did not stand a chance to win against a speedy fighter like Pacquiao.

"He never gave Brandon Rios the opportunity to connect with a solid punch , so we didn't get to see how Manny Pacquiao [would react] after that knockout," said Marquez.

The Mexican, who lost a split decision to another Pacquiao conqueror Timothy Bradley last October, said that the acid test for Pacquiao is to fight someone like him.

"When Manny Pacquiao fights someone with speed and intelligence, someone who counters – Manny does not know what to do or what to expect. Brandon Ríos lacks speed and intelligence inside the ring. He is a fighter who just moves forward and punches. And if you do not bring speed with you, you are going to lose against him,” Marquez added.

While Marquez is goading Pacquiao to fight someone of his caliber, he does not want anything to be part of Pacquiao’s comeback trail in the immediate future.

Instead, he is setting his sights on a possible rematch with Bradley on April 12, the same date that Arum has in mind for Pacquiao’s next fight.

Pacquiao, Victoria's Secret model spar in viral video

MANILA -- Brazilian supermodel and Victoria's Secret star Adriana Lima was at a loss for words when she had a "dream-come-true" encounter with Pinoy boxing champ Manny Pacquiao.

The 32-year-old catwalk superstar met the fighting congressman for a sparring session recently, as shown in an episode of the Fox Sports talk show "Crowd Goes Wild," which aired November 22 in the United States.

The segment was then uploaded on Fox Sports' official YouTube page. As of writing, the video already had over 212,000 views.

In the 84-second clip, Lima is seen gushing as she meets Pacquiao for the first time. "I can't believe it! [This is] like my dream!" she exclaims.

The supermodel is then shown doing exercise routines and later sparring with Pacquiao, who calls Lima's jabs "strong" at one point.

"Boxing is something that became my passion," Lima says in the video.

"She's training for a fashion show and I'm training for the fight," adds Pacquiao, who won against American Brandon Rios in their 12-round welterweight clash, two days after his meeting with Lima aired. Source: Abs-cbn

DEADLOCK BREAKER? | Yolanda loosens knots in talks for greater US military presence

per typhoon Yolanda unleashed deadly winds and storm surges that killed more than 4,000 people - and still counting - and flattened entire communities in five regions, Philippine and United States negotiators had reached an impasse in efforts to forge a framework agreement on increased US military rotational presence in the country. Now, officials from both sides say, the post-Yolanda work into which both sides have been thrust may yet allow the talks to resume smoothly.

Days after the deadly typhoon struck, thousands of US forces on rest and recreation in an aircraft carrier in Asia were quickly recalled to duty - thus it was that the US troops, with their C-130s and Ospreys, provided vital support in ferrying food and water to hungry, homeless storm survivors in remote villages; and transported the wounded to hospitals.

In the view of Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario, what happened further demonstrated the need for a new military framework agreement on an increased US rotational presence in the Philippines. The DFA chief made the remarks in a press conference with a visiting US congressional delegation headed by Representatives Chris Smith of New Jersey, Al Green of Texas and Trent Franks of Arizona.

The congressional delegation is in the country to further express the sympathies of the American people, check on the progress of relief operations and assess what else is needed in terms of emergency relief, rehabilitation and rebuilding.

"What [we have seen] in Central Philippines as a result of this typhoon, and the assistance provided in terms of relief and rescue operation . . . demonstrates the need for this framework agreement that we are working out with the United States for increased rotational presence," del Rosario told reporters in a press conference on Monday.

Smith seconded del Rosario's statement, saying Yolanda has brought the Philippines and the US together and boosted ongoing bilateral negotiations between the superpower and its former colony, which once hosted Clark Air Base and Subic Naval Base, the largest military installation outside the US mainland. The negotiations for a framework agreement to govern the escalation of US’ so-called “rotational” presence in the country is part of the Obama administration’s strategic “pivot” to the Asia-Pacific, re-deploying some of its forces from the Middle East.

"Those of us who are here are very much in favor of the strongest possible bond between the US military and the Philippine military in every aspect, and we know there are negotiations that are under way," Smith said at Monday’s briefing at DFA.

"I think in a paradoxical way the storm has brought all of us even closer together," he added.

In the aftermath of the storm, the US government realized the importance of its strong friendship with the Philippines, Smith said. "So I think every other [negotiations]-- including the economic, the TPP [Trans-Pacific Partnership] and all the other ongoing negotiations, will all be given a positive boost as a direct result of this."

Green, for his part, vowed to do everything to strengthen US-Philippines relations, including efforts to have both militaries working more often together.

"I had the privilege of serving under [the US Congress] armed services committee and as you know. there has been a long, strong historical commitment between our military in America and military in the Philippines. And we are deeply committed . . . to try to do everything that we can to solidify that more and more," he said.

He stressed that the agreement on increased rotational presence could be the key to bringing the US and Philippine military together.

"I think it is really important to take every opportunity we have, including this one. to bring our military efforts close together, because we certainly not only have great common potential points to deal with, but we have a great commitment to …. move forward in the peace effort," Green said.

How deadlock began

The negotiations for the US increased rotational presence in the Philippines had been covered in three meetings, twice in Manila and once in Washington, but hit a snag days before Yolanda struck Eastern and Central Visayas, especially Leyte and Samar provinces.

This was confirmed by Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin two days before Typhoon Yolanda struck Visayas on November 8. He said the impasse occurred because of the US' failure to "clearly agree" to Philippine control over and access to the temporary US facilities that will be set up in the country, once the framework agreement takes effect.

However, Gazmin was confident that further negotiations could iron out all these issues before the agreement is signed. He explained that the "major idea" would be for the Philippines to maximize the benefits of the framework agreement.

The deadlock also happened just as nationalists aired concerns about the constitutionality of the agreement. Some sectors warned it effectively allows Washington to re-establish bases in the country, over 20 years after the Philippine Senate voted against extending the bases treaty in Sept. 1991.

Article XVIII, Section 25 of the Constitution declares: “foreign military bases, troops, or facilities shall not be allowed in the Philippines except under a treaty duly concurred in by the Senate and, when the Congress so requires, ratified by a majority of the votes cast by the people in a national referendum held for that purpose, and recognized as a treaty by the other contracting State.”

Meanwhile, officials see this framework agreement in progress as possibly reinforcing the over 60-year-old Mutual Defense Treaty and the Visiting Forces Agreement.

The MDT has often been invoked by quarters who believe the US should protect the Philippines against what is obviously China's increasingly aggressive presence in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea). The MDT compels both countries to come to each other's aid in case of an attack by a third party.

Korina Sanchez Official Statement Regarding Her Absence

We’ve kept from discussing the controversy over Korina’s absence from her regular shows mainly because we don’t want to get stressed over pointless intriga or intrigue.
While poring over social media status updates, we were quite amazed by all the unkind and uncouth remarks made about Korina.  It’s as if these people can’t think of anything positive and constructive to do.
With the way they’ve carried on, it’s as if they’re all some kind of authority on journalism or ethics.  Puh-leeeez…
Thing is, Korina’s absence from he shows happened just around the time that she mildly quipped her disagreement with CNN Eye-Candy Journo Anderson Cooper, the rumor mills have been soooooo busy coming up with all sorts of reasons why Korina wasn’t being seen on air.
Some say she resigned, some say she was fired, and others say she was suspended… Ridiculous, really.
If you really think about it, why would Korina be suspended over airing her opinion as a radio commentator?  Radio commentary is all about opinions and she gave hers, so she was doing HER job.  Moreover, as we gather, she had just talked with DSWD Secretary Dinky Soliman as well as sources in the military who informed her about they were doing in Samar, Leyte, and other provinces hit by Super Typhoon Yolanda.
That was the FULL context in which she had said that perhaps “Anderson Cooper didn’t know what he was talking about.”  Thing is, Cooper made it a point to say in his report that he wasn’t aware or hadn’t seen government on the ground at the Tacloban City Airport, which is journalistic shorthand for “I DON’T KNOW WHAT’S HAPPENING.”
Anyway, we came across a Youtube video of Korina talking about what she’s doing while she’s off-air.  We found out that unlike some news anchors and news personalities, she actually took a leave of absence to personally help in the relief operations for the victims of Super Typhoon Yolanda.  In our book, that trumps all the opinion making that other anchors and news personalities mistakenly think to be ACTUALLY HELPING PEOPLE.
Sometimes it’s good to just shut up and roll up one’s sleeve and hunker down to REAL RELIEF WORK.
Here is Korina Sanchez’ official statement (per her conversation with Jasmin Romero via phone-patch):
Pagkatapos nun pumunta naman ang aking team sa Zamboanga and is now on its way to Capiz, Iloilo and Palawan.
Translation:
“Jasmine, there have been a lot of speculations about why I was absent from the studio last week and the speculations about why I was off-air are absolutely untrue.  The speculations are not true.  Rated K has been scheduled for some time now to go around the different areas that were hit by the deluge.  You know that, because we talked about my trip to Ormoc.  My team went to Eastern Visayas, Western Visayas, and then Bohol.  My crew and I were about to go to Tacloban but we were prevented from continuing on that trip.  This is just work, we were told by management to leave because it was dangerous for us, so we were diverted to Ormoc and we stayed there for two days.  After that we went to Capiz, Iloilo and Palawan.   I went to Mindoro to give away tents for the victims and before I end my statement, I’d like to request people to stop with their useless speculation.  I’ll just wrap up my visits and we’ll air our episode this coming Sunday.  I’ll repeat, we’ve long been scheduled to take a leave off air to go around the devastated areas but people are trying hard to connect this absence of mine to other issues.  It would be better if you just gave donations.”
That’s telling ‘em Korina!
