oming from a festive Christmas eve celebration, actress Ara Mina didn’t expect that Christmas Day will be her grandfather Ismael “Mel” Mathay Jr.’s last.
The former Quezon City Mayor succumbed to heart attack morning of Dec. 25. He was 81.
On her official Instagram page (realaramina), Ara poured her heart out over her beloved lolo’s passing. She shared a photo of her and the late Mathay describing the latter as an angel.
Ara wrote as caption: “Today heaven has gained another angel. I will treasure the memories I have of you. You were one in a million, a great leader and most importantly the greatest loving, and caring grandfather to all of us. Thank you for all the love. We love you lolo! We will truly miss you…”
Prior, Ara was discharged from hospital in time for Noche Buena. “Thank God I was discharged. So happy I can spend Noche Buena at home with my family.”
She said in another Instagram post: “Here we are last night. Non-stop ang Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year!!! #Christmaseve #family #mylovedones #mylife #myblessings.” She has also re-posted her sister Cristine Reyes’ Christmas dinner picture with the Reyes family.
Meanwhile, a good friend of Ara, Siquijor Vice Governor Dingdong Avanzado has also taken to social media his sympathy to Mathay’s family.
On his Twitter account (@iamdingdong_A), the singer-actor said: “Really sad Christmas Day for me. Found out that my dear friend and mentor Mayor Mel Mathay has passed away this morning. R.I.P #won’t4getU.”
He also shared an old photo with the late public servant via his Instagram account (iamdingdong_a): “Words cannot express the deep sorrow I feel losing a dear friend. he was a dedicated public servant, a good leader, a proud father, lolo, ninong and husband. But most of all, he was a man after God’s heart. Thank you for the wisdom you have imparted to me. I will never forget you. Rest in Peace Mayor Mel Mathay.”
Born on June 26, 1932, Mathay served as QC mayor for three terms from 1992-2001.
Mathay’s remains are at the Christ the King Parish in Greenmeadows Avenue in Quezon City, the same church where he married his long-time partner Vilma Valera in February of this year.
