SEVILLE, Spain (UPDATED) - Gilas Pilipinas fought tooth and nail against Greece, but the Greeks used their physical advantage to shackle the Filipinos at the FIBA World Cup of Basketball in Spain on Sunday (early Monday, Manila time).
Gilas settled for a 70-82 loss to the 5th-ranked Hellas, even while the Filipinos got the loudest cheers from the dominant Pinoy crowd at the Municipal de Deportes San Pablo.
Andray Blatche was the lone Gilas player in the match with a double-digit output. He scored points and grabbed 14 rebounds.
June Mar Fajardo also inflicted damage on the Greek squad with 10 points.
Marc Pingris added 7, while Jayson Castro and Paul Lee had 5 points apiece.
Jeffrei Chan, who rained treys against Croatia in their previous game, was limited to 3 points.
The nationals limited the deficit to 1 point early in the game when Blatche scored back-to-back baskets to pull the Filipinos, 5-6.
But the Greeks, led by Georgios Printezis, immediately made adjustments and started pulling away, 20-10.
The Greeks maintained the distance for the next two quarters and even led by 15 at one point.
Chan tried to get things going for the nationals in the fourth by opening the quarter with a booming triple, but the Hellas used their wider bodies and height advantage to limit Gilas' movements.
Gianis Bourosis had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Greece.
It is Gilas' second-straight defeat in the tournament, following an overtime loss to 16th ranked Croatia on Saturday.
The nationals also suffered a double whammy when a commotion broke out between them and the Greeks at the end of the game.
Fortunately, cooler heads prevailed and prevented what could have been a fist fight between the two squads.
Gilas will next face 3rd-ranked Argentina.
