BRUSSELS - President Aquino is ready to step down in 2016 but has to ensure that the country will be better compared to 2010, Deputy Presidential Spokeswoman Abigail Valte said.
Valte confirmed that the President is aware of the exact number of days before he leaves Malacanang.
"The President is excitedly counting his days in the office. The President has a calendar in his office where he is excitedly pulling the days so he knows, even kami. Alam nya kung gaano na lang katagal before he steps down in June 30,2016," she said.
In an interview, Valte said it is clear with the President what he has to do before his term ends.
"The President has always been adamant , that he has 6 years, that's what he wants to do. But you know he always listens to the voice of his people. Tingin ko malinaw na rin sa Pangulo kung ano yung gagawin nya. He always says 'I want to leave the Philippines in 2016 in a better state than when I found it in 2010,'" she said.
She also pointed out that the President has been explaining his work and would often say to everybody that he is not a masochist.
Some people, meanwhile, are appealing for a term extension for President Aquino.
"Ako'y pabor kay Presidente Aquino na magkaroon sya ng extension. Nakikita ko sa kanya ang tunay na presidente na maraming nagawa sa bansa. Bukod po rito, marami syang naipakulong na mga opisyal na corrupt," said Mario Fajardo, area commander of the Knights of Rizal in Brussels.
But whether President Aquino runs for re-election or not, many still believe that the country's future lies in the hands of Filipinos as they choose the next head of state in the 2016 elections.
