MANILA - Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC) spokesman and heinous crime victim Arsenio "Boy" Evangelista warned President Benigno Aquino III that his refusal to accept that there is a problem in the country's police leadership will ultimately bring about a resurgence of vigilantism.
Evangelista, whose son Venson was brutally killed in 2011, took the President to task for seemingly coddling and tolerating police scalawags when he defended Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Alan Purisima in his speech on Friday morning.
Evangelista said Aquino must realize that the peace and order situation in the country is at its worst now, and that he should be alarmed that there is an upsurge of cases where men in uniform are involved, be they major or minor crimes.
He said the media or watchdog organizations like VACC should not be blamed for reporting and monitoring crimes.
There is a serious breakdown in the system, he said, and he blamed Aquino's weak leadership for this.
Evangelista said victims coming to the VACC instead of the police to report heinous crimes is clearly an indication that the citizenry has lost its trust in the PNP, which he claimed is the biggest crime syndicate.
Therefore, he said, no one and no place is safe, such that citizens can no longer be sure that they will be able to come back safe to their homes at night.
