Couple prioritizing pregnancy over wedding
MANILA -- Melissa Ricks and her boyfriend, Charles Togesaki, are putting off their wedding plans to prioritize preparations in welcoming their first child.
Ricks, who is five months into her pregnancy, spoke about her relationship with Togesaki on the sidelines of a press event by makeup and skin care brand Clinique.
"Napag-usapan na namin, pero there's no rush to get married," the 24-year-old actress told ABS-CBN News' Gretchen Fullido on Tuesday. "Priority ang baby, whatever's good for the baby. Siguro priority muna [ang baby], kasi ang wedding is a lot of money also, 'di ba?"
"Ngayon, nothing's a rush. One thing at a time... We talked about it (wedding plans) na. At saka dapat may proposal, 'di ba? Basta masaya ako, that's what matters," she added.
Charles on red carpet
Ricks first confirmed her pregnancy last July 30. At the time, the actress said she would prefer to keep her relationship with Togesaki private. While Togesaki was with Ricks during her sit-down interview with ABS-CBN News, the couple decided not to have him face the cameras.
Last Saturday's 8th Star Magic Ball marked the first time Ricks and Togesaki attended a showbiz event as a couple. Together, they walked the red carpet at the Makati Shangri-La Hotel and gamely posed for photos.
"I'm very happy na (designer) Michael Leyva talaga made something special for me," Ricks said of the dress she wore to the ball. "Ayoko itago, I'm very proud na I'm pregnant. During the ball, we had so much fun."
"Masaya ako ngayon, eh. Sobrang saya ko with everything that's happening. Iba talaga 'yung feeling na pregnant ka and that a blessing is coming. Everything is working out really well," she said.
In her July interview, Ricks said Togesaki's family was thrilled to find out about her pregnancy. She noted that the baby will be the first grandchild of both sides of the family.
"Sobrang natutuwa ako, kasi first apo 'to both sides. They're all excited. They're very kind and welcoming to me, kahit 'yung mga friends niya (Togesaki), sobrang babait nila sa akin," she said at the time.
Referring to her relationship with Togesaki, Ricks added: "It's a whole, different new world na pinasok ko. Kasi sanay ako, puro showbiz friends ko. Ngayon, I have whole new group of friends that don't involve showbiz. Sobrang natutuwa ako."
Happy mom, happy baby
With only four months left before she gives birth, Ricks said she still manages to do regular activities. According to the actress, her doctor advised her to stay home and have more frequent rests on her seventh month.
But for now, Ricks still gets to enjoy going out with friends with little discomfort.
"Ayoko rin naman na magmukmok sa bahay, bed rest, mga ganyan," she said. "Siyempre it's also good for the baby that I do the regular things that I do -- I walk around, have fun, make myself happy, para happy rin si baby,' di ba? Na-pi-feel ni baby kung ano na-pi-feel ko."
As of her last checkup, Ricks and Togesaki have yet to find out the sex of their baby. She said they will likely know on her next checkup in three weeks.
Asked whether she hopes to have a girl or a boy for her first child, Ricks said: "Siyempre gusto ko girl para mabihisan, maarte, kikay, ganyan, pero if boy... Whether boy o girl, it's a blessing talaga. I'm very excited to find out para makapili na ako ng mga bibilhin, ng games, 'di ba."
When she gives birth some time in January, Ricks happily shared that her family will be complete. Her mother, who is based in the United States, will be flying in in December, while her brother is planning to return home in time for her due date.
