MANILA – National Basketball Association (NBA) legend and former Brooklyn Nets coach Avery Johnson said he is mighty proud of Andray Blatche’s performance with Gilas Pilipinas at the FIBA World Cup of Basketball.
Despite failing to lead the nationals to the second round of the world joust, Blatche proved that he is a big asset for Gilas because of his game, said Johnson.
“I am so happy for Andray with what he was able to do. He has shown the world what he can do with his game, shooting, scoring, rebounding and all,” said Johnson, who was among the NBA personalities who arrived in Manila to visit the survivors of typhoon Yolanda in North Cebu.
“The team that picks him up this season will be getting a gem,” added Johnson.
Prior to joining Gilas, Blatche opted out of his contract with the Brooklyn Nets to find a new NBA team. Rumors are rife that he has been dealing with former NBA champion, Miami Heat.
The 6'11" naturalized player normed 21.2 points and 13.8 rebounds in his first tour of duty for the Philippines in the FIBA World Cup.
Johnson arrived in Manila together with Portland Trailbazers Robin Lopez and Wes Matthews Jr. They will hold a series of basketball clinics in Manila before flying to Cebu.
Matthews said he hopes that they will be able to touch the lives of typhoon victims.
“When you hear of devastation like that, it’s hard to imagine… So to be able to be there and just be around them, I hope we can help a lot,” he said. -- With a report from TJ Manotoc, ABS-CBN News
